Rostow’s stages of economic growth and india’s development experiences

Author:
Dr. Venu Gopal, P.
Subject Area:
Social Sciences and Humanities
Abstract:

Walt Whitman Rostow’s theory of economic development, presented in The Stages of Economic Growth: A Non-Communist Manifesto, explains how economies progress through five stages: traditional society, preconditions for take-off, take-off, drive to maturity, and age of high mass consumption. This model provides a structured framework to understand economic transformation from agrarian systems to advanced industrial economies. In the context of India, the theory offers useful insights but has limitations. Before independence, India resembled a traditional society with an agriculture-based economy. After 1947, planned development under leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru created the preconditions for growth through industrialization and infrastructure. The economic reforms of 1991 marked the take-off stage, leading to rapid growth, especially in services and technology. In recent decades, India has shown features of the drive to maturity, with diversification and global integration. However, India has not fully reached the stage of high mass consumption due to challenges like inequality, poverty, and regional disparities. Moreover, its development path is non-linear and service-led, unlike Rostow’s industrial focus. Thus, while Rostow’s model helps explain broad trends, India’s experience highlights the need for a more flexible and inclusive approach to development.
